Burnley Library*

1930 – Burnley, England. Lat/Long 53.787500 -2.241389

The most modern of the archetypal library buildings here, Burnley displays a substantial manifestation of the refined library design principles which were developed in the earlier Carnegie Library buildings. Its reliance on top-lighting and its barrel-vaulted central rooflight demonstrate that delivering excellent natural lighting was still a priority in 1930. The building has not been significantly modified and evidently remains a very popular resource.

Designed by: George Hartley and Arthur Race (Borough Engineer) of Barrow-in-Furness.

Heritage designation: LG II,1992. Purpose built library; Carnegie UK Trust: £16,500 11/01/1917.   Open library, council managed.
